What is the Mumbai University black book format?
In University of Mumbai engineering colleges, the black book is the hard-bound final project report of the B.E. year. The University’s guidelines for theses, dissertations and project reports ask for the final hard-bound copies in black, with the lettering embossed in gold. The University’s B.E. Computer Engineering syllabus for Semesters VII and VIII lists the “Project Report (Black Book)”, printed on both sides, in the term work for Major Project 2 in Semester VIII.

How does the M.E. dissertation work at the University of Mumbai?
The University of Mumbai’s syllabi call the postgraduate engineering degree the M.E. (Master of Engineering); some autonomous institutes in Mumbai name theirs M.Tech. In the Rev. 2022 M.E. syllabi, the whole second year is the dissertation, and it carries 26 of the programme’s 68 credits.

Three more rules from the same syllabus shape your plan. Dissertation-II can’t be submitted until every other requirement of the course is complete. Two online credit courses on NPTEL, Swayam or a similar platform, one of them in research methodology, research and publication ethics or IPR, must be finished by the end of Semester III. And students should publish at least one paper from the work in a refereed conference or journal. What does the University of Mumbai ask for at PhD synopsis and thesis submission?
The University’s Ph.D. submission checklist lists the documents for each step. These are the ones scholars most often have to plan for:
- Topic approval: the research proposal in three copies. In the Faculty of Science and Technology, the prescribed proposal format has 13 headings, from aims and objectives, the literature review and the national and international status to hypotheses, methodology, a statistical plan, limitations, expected outcomes and a bibliography.
- Synopsis: no earlier than 34 months after admission, in three copies, with the course work completion certificate, six-monthly RAC progress reports including a fresh one just before submission, at least one research paper published in a refereed and cited or UGC-approved journal, and two paper presentations at conferences or seminars.
- Thesis: between two and six months after the synopsis, as one hard copy with a CD, together with a similarity report from the software the University specifies.
Checklists and ordinances are revised, so confirm the current version with your research centre before each step.
